Ward 8 Deserves Better
"Our communities thrive when our leaders truly listen, respond, and put residents first. Ward 8 needs a councillor who is accountable, engaged, and committed to making real change at City Hall.
It’s time for leadership that understands whose money is being spent and prioritizes responsible, community driven decision making. I will listen, act, and deliver results for Ward 8. Let’s build a stronger, more responsive Calgary—together."
Policy Platform For Ward 8 Candidate Cornelia Wiebe
Opposition to Blanket Upzoning in Calgary
I strongly oppose the blanket upzoning policy in Calgary and commit to repealing it if elected. While I support responsible urban development, this one-size-fits-all approach disregards community input, threatens neighbourhood character, and imposes zoning changes without adequate infrastructure planning.
Action Plan
-
Immediate Repeal: I will work to reverse blanket upzoning and restore local zoning comment and engagement.
-
Community-Led Development: Establish clear guidelines for developers that include neighbourhood planning with resident input.
-
Infrastructure-First Growth: Prioritize infrastructure upgrades before approving high-density developments.
-
Sustainable & Balanced Housing Strategy: Promote density where it makes sense while preserving Calgary’s unique communities.
I stand for a Calgary where growth is thoughtful, sustainable, and community-driven. Blanket upzoning is not the right path forward, and I am committed to repealing it in favour of a balanced, responsible approach to urban development.
Restoring Safety and Compassion: A New Approach to Mental Health, Addiction, in Ward 8
Our city is facing an escalating crisis of addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges. The current approach has failed to address the root causes of addiction and has instead contributed to increasing public safety concerns, disorder, and deteriorating conditions for both vulnerable individuals and the surrounding community.
I believe in a compassionate yet firm approach to addressing addiction and homelessness—one that focuses on recovery rather than reliance. Our city deserves a safe, healthy, and thriving community where residents, businesses, and vulnerable individuals are supported through policies that focus on long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes. Through strong leadership, provincial collaboration, and a focus on rehabilitation over harm reduction, we can restore trust in our city’s ability to tackle this crisis.
It is time for a change that prioritizes rehabilitation, treatment, and community trust.
A Responsible & Efficient City Hall
I am committed to ensuring that every tax dollar is spent efficiently, transparently, and on core services that directly benefit our community. While "nice-to-have" projects may be desirable, they must never come at the expense of core services. Cities must focus on delivering essential services such as maintaining infrastructure, public safety, waste management, transit, street repair, and responsible urban planning.
I will prioritize a needs-based budgeting approach, ensuring that spending reflects the priorities of residents.
Municipal budgets often contain inefficiencies due to program duplication, redundant services, and bureaucratic overlap. I will request a review to find efficiencies & eliminate waste.
Calgarians deserve to know how their money is being spent. City hall must be transparent and accountable to you — the taxpayer.
